The Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation of Chennai would be celebrating its ‘Margazhi Bala Utsavam’ (the Mylapore Festival of Tradition and Culture for Children and Youth) for the 10th year in 2012.
According to a note from the Mylapore Trio, S Amarnath, S Surendranath and S Aparna, who run the foundation, says that registration and selection tests began on December 1, 2011. They would go on till January 10, 2012 on all Saturdays, Sundays and festival holidays. Those who wish to come on a weekday, please call them before going.

The selection test would be between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. A registration fee of Rs 50 is being charged for each category that the participant wants to take part in.
But there is a word of caution for participants, parents, children and rasikas – you will have to appear in traditional attire during registration, selection and the final events.
Competitions
Kids section – 5 competitions: bhajan, flower kolam, painting, story telling, fancy dress
All other levels – 16 competitions
Category 1 – Performing Arts: Bharatanatyam, kirtanai, bhajan, Thirupaavai, Thiruvempaavai, instrument.
Category 2 – Fine Arts: maa kolam, flower kolam, painting, junk art, mehandi.
Category 3 – Academic Arts: handwriting, essay writing, oratorical, story telling, fancy dress.
Common topic for competitions – Nava Bakthi – painting, essay writing, oratorical, story telling and fancy dress.
Participatory event - slokam for kids and all levels. (recitation/chanting – any language).
Prizes
There will be certificates and medals for participants, certificates and prizes for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and consolation prize for winners.
“A gold-coated rolling trophy in the name of our grandmother and patron, late Smt R Nagammal, is awarded to the institution for large participation,” says Surendranath.
The final events would take place on two days: January 14, 2012 and January 22, 2012.
The date and time will be announced later, says the Trio.
