Vaikunta Ekadasi at Danvantri Peedam

Vaikunta Ekadasi will be celebrated at the Sri Danvantri Arogya Peedam, Walajapet, in Vellore district, on Thursday, January 5, 2012 with special mass prayers, Danvantri homam, abishekam and poojas.

The festival occurs in the Hindu calendar in the month of Margashirsha (between December and January). Also called the ‘Mukkoti Ekadasi’, when observed, it bestows liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Fasting on Vaikunta Ekadasi is equivalent to fasting on the remaining 23 Ekadasis and is considered holier than any other religious observation.

On this day, the Vaikunta Dwaram or the Swarga Vaasal, ‘the gates of heaven’, are believed to be kept open. The area encircling the sanctum is referred to as Swarga Vaasal and devotees throng to gain entry into the temple, to seek the lord.

The day of Ekadasi is to be spent in prayers and japam and visits to the temple.

Sri Muralidhara Swamigal, the founder of the peedam, has made arrangements for distribution of prasadham – agatthi keerai and nellikkai pachchadi - on Dvadasi day, which is a must for breaking the fast observed during Ekadasi.

“All are invited to participate in the mass prayers and have the darshan of 468 Siddhars and Kaala Chakram on Vaikunta Ekadasi day and receive the blessings of Lord Danvantri and Sri Muralidhara Swamigal for a disease and disorder-free life,” says a note from the peedam.
