Walk down this nostalgic food street

Having ruled India for so long, it was but natural for the British to be influenced by its customs, food and lifestyle and it happened the other way also. It would be a truism to say that we borrowed many of their ideas on a lot of things.

But food was one distinct feature that got influenced both ways. Talking about food, they have imported many from our south Indian recipes. To feed the nostalgic in the city and to celebrate the 371st Madras Day, one of Chennai’s premier five-star hotels, The Accord Metropolitan, has planned a 10-day grand food festival – The English August - to serve delightful dishes of the Anglo era.

The fest, which began August 12 and will be celebrated till August 22 from 7.30 p.m. to 11 p.m., has nearly four cycles of menus.

These consist of 10 non-vegetarian and 18 vegetarian dishes which include two soups and 10 salads. The rest are special and unique dishes such as Vendaikai Kozhambu, Kondaikadalai Curry, Kalandakai Masala, Kavipoo Urulai Varuval, roasted root vegetables and cutlets.

Some of the non-vegetarian dishes were Varaimilagai Iraichi Varuval and Iraichi Biriyani.

Speaking about the dishes, the festival’s chief chef says that “All the dishes are of the Anglo-Indian type. Some of the dishes are exclusively their own recipes.”

The dishes, though they seem south Indian at first look, are typically Anglo-Indian and take one back to the British era.
