SRR birthday celebrations

M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women celebrated the 125th birthday of Dr.S.R. Ranganathan in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Library Association on the 20th of September, 2017. Dr. Ranganathan, hailed as the father of library science in India, was instrumental in creating a niche for library and information science in the country, and was the driving force that shaped the formative years of library science. Dr. Lalitha Balakrishnan, principal of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, a staunch advocate of the importance of reading, held the audience spellbound with her address. Ms. C. Haripriya, Head Librarian of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, spoke eloquently on the legacy of Dr. Ranganathan, and how his teachings inspired the innovative services offered at the college library. Ms. Haripriya was also the recipient of the Best Women’s College Librarian award during the event. The Chief Guest of the celebration was Dr. K. Malaiswamy, former Home Secretary and State Election Commissioner, whose witty discourse about the importance of time management and goal setting offered great wisdom in a lighter vein. Other recipients of awards during the celebrations were Dr. G. Krishnamoorthy, library director at Anna University, Dr. K. Rajkumar, librarian at Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Arts College, and Mr. S. Elango, librarian at the L.L.A. branch library in Thiruvanmiyur.
