Pick up a stick, learn a trick

Pick up that stick and one day you may become another Bodhidharma! Does this interest you? It has already interested the students of SDNB Vaishnav College for Women, Chromepet, as they have enrolled themselves for the silambattam course being conducted on the college grounds.

The students were very hesitant to join a martial arts class, but the interesting lecture given by Manohar, the leader of the team, and the absorbing demonstration by Germaanz and Kallakambu converted these quaking girls to sign up for the silambattam course.

The added attraction was that it was free!

This old and traditional martial art of Tamil Nadu, where just a bamboo stick is used for defence and attack, is slowly disappearing and needs to be revived by youngsters, was Manohar’s clinching appeal.

He also gave some tips on how to be a winner in silambattam and live a long and healthy life.

Breathing 15 times a minute is a way to judge one’s health, he explained.

R Sowndarya, one of the brave students who opted to learn silambattam, said they started the classes with warming up exercises.

The hesitant students sprung up and joined the classes also because they were assured by the silambattam trainers that this martial art would make them fearless and equip them to deal with any tricky situations boldly.
