November 14 being World Diabetes Day, eminent doctors from various streams converged to talk about the lifestyle disease and dispel the myths surrounding it and educate people.
Prevention of diabetes and its complications was the spotlight of a discussion organised by M V Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram, at GRT Convention Centre, T Nagar.
The awareness programme was inaugurated by Shivdas Meena, managing director Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation Ltd, with the launch of a diabetic kit - Understand Diabetes and Take Control - a self-care kit which contains things required for day-to-day life for diabetic patients like measuring cups, diabetic manuals, etc.
Shivdas Meena spoke about the need to lead a healthy lifestyle by doing regular exercises and eating healthy food.
Dr Vijay Viswanathan, managing director, M V Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetic Research Centre, laid emphasis on the health and well-being of a person.
Prof Thanikachalam, a leading cardiologist, stressed the importance of being fit and staying healthy. He also declared that diabetes accentuates cardiac problems and highlighted the need to understand the disease at first.
Dr Nammperumalswamy, ophthalmologist of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, declared that diabetes was one of the causes of blindness in India. He dwelt on the various complications in the eye which arise due to diabetes.
Dr E S Krishnamurthy of VHS - a leading neurologist - cited examples of neuro-psychiatric cases that he has come across due to diabetes. He complained that only the economically-backward are the worst sufferers.
Dr Gita Arjun, gynecologist of E V Kalyani Hospital, Chennai, Dr P B Sivaraman, urologist, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, Dr Gokulnath, nephrologist, St John’s Medical College, Bangalore, and Dr Varsha, nutritionist, Chennai, answered the queries of the public and cleared their doubts. They unanimously accepted that awareness was important in treating diabetes and its complications.
