MoU for more research on diabetic wounds

M V Hospital for Diabetes and Prof M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram, and Wound Healing Group, University of Southampton, signed on January 22 a memorandum of understanding to promote diabetic wound healing research and training in India.

The MoU was signed between Prof Vijay Viswanathan, managing director, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes and Prof M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram, and Prof Raj Mani, faculty of medicine and health and lifesciences, School of Medicine, University of Southampton, UK, in the presence of Mike Nitavrianakis, deputy high commissioner, British High Commission, Chennai.

More than 200 delegates participated in the meeting where medical faculty of India and overseas addressed various sessions on wound healing in diabetes.

Prof Vijay Viswanathan said, “There are many people who come to the hospital every day with diabetic wounds and in a serious condition. Since they consult the doctors at an advanced stage the only solution is amputation. So, a person needs right knowledge to identify the disease at an early stage so that they can be cured quickly.”

Prof Raj Mani assured that the joint venture would improve the quality of life of everyone who has diabetic wounds.

One of the international faculty, Prof Finn Gottrup, a professor of surgery, University of Southern Denmark, Copenhagen Wound Healing Centre, described the four types of diabetic wounds: leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic food ulcers, complicated ulcers. He focused on diabetic foot ulcers. Globally, 3 to 6 per cent of elders suffer from diabetic wounds with many people in India and China suffering from it. He said the numbers would increase in the next 10-15 years.
