Junk Food - Health Hazards

“Junk food” is always appealing to the taste buds for many people than healthy and nutritional food. It is irresistible for everyone regardless of the age group they belong to. Be it a football match, celebratory party, weekend hangout, or even a depressing day, junk food is a must in the “to-eat” list. People crave for it even when they’re aware of its darker side, its little or zero nutritional value and high level of calories. They are made to look attractive and addictive. Those junk foods cause drastic effects on our body and, surprisingly, our brain too.

The more junk food we consume the less likely we are to consume the essential nutrients that our body relies on. The regular intake of junk food can increase the risk of having metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions like abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high serum triglycerides and low high density lipoprotein levels. Junk food can cause infertility and PCOD as they damage the secretion of female reproductive hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone. Teenagers who are suffering from PCOD are mostly regular consumers of junk food, says Dr. Ganitha, gynaecologist and Professor in Tagore Medical College, Chennai.

Recent studies show that junk food can cause cancer in people of all body types even though they have a healthy body mass. According to a research and study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2011, consumption of junk food lessens the ability to control appetite, deteriorates memory and presence of mind, increases laziness and hyper sexuality. It also leads to a psychological disorder named Bulimia Nervosa also called as Bulimia. It is a severe eating disorder which is mostly characterized by binge eating and purging. Binge eating refers to the intake of large amount of food in a short period of time. Purging refers to the attempts to get rid of the food by vomiting and by using laxatives as people with such disorder have the fear of becoming fat due to high intake of calories.

Most of the dieticians and nutritionists advice people not to consume more junk food or just to avoid them entirely. The metabolic syndrome and the other health disorders caused by it can be controlled only by exercising and diet restrictions. Junk food must be replaced with natural and healthy, nutritional foods. The intake of fruits and vegetables helps in controlling our body weight. Mostly chicken can be replaced with eggplant and mushrooms as they have similar taste. Likewise, regular brisk walking or jogging can helps us to burn calories, stay fit and healthy provided that we have a change in diet.
