A shandy close to Chennai

Want to enjoy a nice village atmosphere – like a sandhai (open market - shandy)? Want to buy things from TV, furniture to fresh veggies? Then hit the road to Chennai’s suburb - Pallavaram - and your wishes will come true.

The buzz of buyers and the noisy cry of hawkers fill the air in Pallavaram sandhai every Friday.

Name a product and you get it here. Though the products may only be of second quality, the buyers are attracted by the low prices.

The market has been in existence for 10 years and is under the control of a private operator. Each hawker has to pay Rs 50/100, depending on the size of his/her shop. The hawkers excitedly state that they make a profit of nearly 20 per cent every Friday.

They seem happy with the returns and do not see the need to sell goods on all days. When it comes to festival seasons, their products/goods sell like hot cakes.

The buyers are happy that they get good bargains. They say that some of the products are better priced here than in retail shops. The vegetables are straight from the farms nearby and are fresh, explained a vegetable vendor who is not really particular about selling veggies on all days.

Kitchen utensils and other household articles are sold at throwaway prices. Even the crockery and cutlery items are attractive and tempt one to grab them.

Economically-backward persons can buy TV sets, sofa sets, dining table, side tables, etc., as they are pocket-friendly and safe to buy. The whole atmosphere ensures you will visit this place again and again.
