The damsel of Sivaganga, a vibrant town in Tamil Nadu, has produced a woman with a golden voice who has been creating waves. The lass is Chinna Ponnu a popular figure who has rendered ‘Semmozhiyana Tamizhmozhiyam’ along with a group of singers.
She forayed into film music with ‘Annanoda Pattu’ in ‘Chandramukhi’ followed by the peppy toe-tapping ‘Nakka Mukka’ in ‘Kadhalil Vizhunden’, for which she was awarded the golden edition award. Her parents were also folksingers who were appreciated by the multitude and Chinna Ponnu was placed under the tutelage of renowned folksingers Kottaswamy and Gunasekaran. They nurtured and embellished her art.
Chinna Ponnu is on cloud nine for singing the theme song for the World Classical Tamil Conference along with reputed musicians. She got good coverage on TV as the song was aired frequently.
Chinna Ponnu has become a star overnight as her participation in the Semmozhi video has created ripples in music circles. Her husband Kumar is of great support to her.
Chinna Ponnu wants to propagate folk music in schools and colleges as she calls it a treasure which we should nurture.
