Sai Charan – Child prodigy to Super Singer

All through Vijay TV’s Super Singer 3 reality show, singing sensation Sai Charan had been repeatedly saying that it was like a penance (thavam) for him to win the Super Singer title. He had let it slip through his fingers during the Juniors competition but this time he was determined to grab it with both hands. His talent, single-minded devotion and hard work paid off – it was Sai Charan who was crowned Super Singer of Vijay TV in the third edition of the reality show.

“I really toiled hard to reach the finals of Vijay TV’s Super Singer 3 because that has always been my dream. I am in 7th heaven and it is a dream come true for me. My mother has taken special care and has been a pillar of support. My gurus mean so much to me as I owe everything to them. My strong classical grooming has helped me a lot.

“I was awestruck when I was chosen the winner. I wish to complete my engineering with good marks and pursue music at the same time,” said a jubilant Sai to Chennailivenews.

A child prodigy, he strikes the right chord in music with his resonant voice and unflagging energy. His passion to pursue classical and cinema music showcases his zest for the art.

Sai was initiated into Carnatic music when he was barely four and his first guru was Aravindam of Chromepet. He laid a strong foundation for a strong musical career.

“Padmanabhan of the renowned Chembai school taught me the nitty-gritty with harmonium and Meera Kedarnathan honed my skills,” says Sai.

At present, he is under the guidance of Leelavathi Gopalakrishnan, who has “broadened my vistas”. She taught him the basic principles of handling a concert and how to sing alapana, niraval and swaras. “All my gurus would not bother about time and the classes would go on endlessly.”

Aspiring to become a G N Balasubramaniam or Sanjay Subramaniam, he would listen to all the stalwarts of yesteryear and assimilate their styles.

“When I was a part of Ramjhi’s Isai Mazhalai, I was exposed to the ocean of music in all its dimensions which gave a breakthrough in my life,” remembers Sai.

He recalls a time when he listened to his neighbours recite Vishnu Sahasaranamam daily and one day he recited it verbatim to the surprise of his parents. His mother promptly placed him under a teacher who taught him Bhagavad Gita. This paid off and he won several prizes in competitions held in various schools.

Sai has not just won the Super Singer title, but has also bagged a promise from producer/director A R Murugadoss – who assured at the function – that he would give an opportunity for the winner of the Super Singer title to sing in his next film.

Apart from that Sai is now the proud owner of a Rs 40 lakh worth flat of Arun Excello developers.

And last but now the least, the fame that comes with the title of Super Singer!
