Maharajapuram Santhanam memorial function

Maharajapuram Santhanam was a renowned musician who enthralled rasikas with his mellifluous voice and stunning repertoire. A part of the celebrated Maharajapuram musical tree, his untimely death has caused a void in the music world.

His rasikas, under the Maharajapuram Santhanam Memorial Trust, conduct programmes annually to remember the musical genius.

This year the event is held on:

June 23 at Sri Obul Reddy Hall, Vani Mahal, T Nagar, at 6 p.m.

P A Mani (commissioner, Arts and Culture, Government of Tamil Nadu) presides.

Tiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam, an eminent mridangist, will pay tribute to Maharajapuram Santhanam.

The trust also honours prominent musicians and this year’s recipients are:

Sethalapathy Soundararaja Bhagavathar (Nama Sankeerthanam)

K Somu (Veeramani) music director.

Mediclaim policies to deserving musicians will be distributed.

This will be followed by ‘Laya Mudhra’, a grand instrumental performance by Tiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam and troupe.

Simultaneously, Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam Memorial Concerts are being held on June 23 in association with Sri Thiagabrahma Sabha, Thanjavur, at Sri Besant Lodge, Thanjavur.

O S Thiagarajan’s vocal recital would be supported by Mullaivasal G. Chandramouli on the violin and S Thiagarajan on the mridangam.

The memorial is being observed at Chidambaram in association with Shri Sabapathy Sangeetha Gana Sabha, at the famous Nataraja temple.

Gayathri Girish’s vocal concert would be embellished by Mysore V. Srikanth on the violin and Chidambaram S. Balashankar on the mridangam.

Crossing the state’s border, the Shri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society, Secunderabad, is conducting the memorial concert on the same day.

Thopur Sairam’s vocal recital has R. Dinakar on the violin, Burra Shriram on the mridangam and B Janardhanan on the ghatam.

There would be an instrumental ensemble in association with the Perambur Sangeeta Sabha at Annadhana Samajam, Chennai. ‘Vadyatharangani’, an instrumental ensemble by V V Srinivasa Rao on the violin, Prapancham Balachandar on the flute, N Vijayalakshmi on the veena, R Ramesh on the mridangam and Trichy Murali on the ghatam would be the non-vocal tribute to the doyen of Carnatic music.
