Agni Natchathiram begins Wednesday

Chennai, May 3: The 26-day peak summer - Agni Natchathiram, Dog Days of May or Kathiri Veyil – which begins tomorrow with the mercury predicted to soar beyond the 40 degrees Celsius mark, will end May 29.

Tamil Nadu has been reeling under sweltering heat for the last 10 days with the mercury already touching 40 degrees Celsius in places like Vellore.

The maximum temperature reported during last year's Kathiri season was around 43 degrees Celsius.

Chennai City recorded a high of 40.9 degrees Celsius on May 29 last year, according to the Met Office.

There was a short spell of rain a few days back due to an upper air circulation over Kanyakumari, but Chennaiites are now reeling under intense heat conditions.

Many philanthropists have set up thanneer pandal, and are distributing buttermilk, water and panagam.
