Mango Season

Mangai paruppu

Ingredients

Mango - 2 big ones
Toor dhal - 50 gm
Red chillies – 3
Green chillies – 4
Ginger - 1 small piece
Asafoetida - ½ spoon
Mustard - 1 spoon
Oil - 2 spoons
Turmeric powder - ¼ spoon
Salt to taste
Curry and coriander leaves

Method

Wash and peel the mangoes. Cut the mangoes into fine pieces. Cook the mango pieces and toor dhal separately.

In a thick-bottomed vessel, add the cooked toor dhal and mango pieces. Pour a little water. Add turmeric powder, salt and allow it to mix for five minutes. In a pan, pour oil, splutter mustard and add red, green chillies, asafoetida powder, ginger and transfer it to the cooked mangoes and allow it to boil for about 10 minutes so that it blends well. Garnish it with curry and coriander leaves.

Mango paruppu is a good substitute for sambar and tastes heavenly.
