Chennai, August 14: It was a day to remember for followers of Vedathri Maharishi: his centenary was celebrated in a gala manner and a postal stamp was also issued to perpetuate his memory.
The function, which was held in the spacious Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, saw attendance by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and almost all his Cabinet colleagues. Apart from them, it was a packed house.
While the centenary souvenir was released by Karunanidhi, who chaired the function, the first copy was received by famous industrialist and spiritualist N Mahalingam.
The special stamp on the Maharishi was released by Union Telecom Minister A Raja, and the first copy was received by the Chief Minister.
Showering praise on the Maharishi, whom he equated to a Siddhar, he said he had left a lasting impression on society. He has taught self-discipline, a sense of responsibility, service and a spirit of giving, said Karunanidhi.
He explained that the Maharishi had taught about the right way to breathe in order to lead a healthy, long life. Karunanidhi, who learnt Yoga under guru Desikachariar, said he had also mastered the art and his health was proof that he practised it regularly.
He wished that people would also give attention to breathing techniques and doing exercises and live long to serve the nation.
