Virudhunagar, August 10: Eight government servants, four of them police personnel, suffered severe burn injuries during an inspection of unlicensed cracker manufacturing units in Sattur, in Virudhunagar district.
According to police sources, cracker manufacture is peaking in the small and big units in places like Sattur and Sivakasi for the coming Deepavali season. To check on the mushrooming unlicensed cracker units that come up in residential houses and godowns, the police carried out surprise inspections today.
This morning, the personnel were at a godown in Duraiswamipuram, belonging to Rama Subbu. There was a huge explosion when the inspection was on.
Sattur police inspector Abdul Latheef, sub-inspector Ramesh, constables Ganesan and Asaikani, revenue inspectors Rajamohan, Chandrasekar and Rajeshkannan, and VAO Kumarasami were grievously injured in the blast.
While the rest of the injured were being treated at the Sivakasi government hospital, Latheef and Ramesh, who were severely burnt, are being treated a private hospital in Madurai.
