TN clarifies on pvt school fees

Chennai, August 11: The Tamil Nadu government today reconfirmed after Justice Govindarajan cleared the air yesterday about the fees to be collected by private matriculation schools - the schools are permitted to collect only the fees that were determined by the committee in May and not a paisa more.

In a statement today, the government said Justice Govindarajan’s stand was clear. About 6,400 revision petitions have been received by the committee that was constituted to determine the fees that these private schools should charge. It is the stand of the schools that the fees prescribed by the committee are not sufficient to provide adequate infrastructure for the students nor pay a decent salary for the teachers.

The government statement said it has directed the committee to take up each case individually, categorise them and then decide the quantum of fees after that.

Since this would take time, Justice Govindarajan had advised these schools to collect fees as per the committee’s May order for the current academic year and the new fee structure would come into force for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The government statement was by way of clearing this idea as school managements and the public were a little confused after the committee’s announcement yesterday.
