Chennai, August 11: Sri Lanka has set up a 25-member committee to hold talks with Tamil Nadu fishermen to put an end to the constant clash between the two fishermen groups.
The committee has representatives of the Lankan fishermen association and those from NGOs.
The committee members would be visiting Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on August 16 to hold peace talks with members of the Tamil Nadu fishermen associations’ representatives there.
They would also be visiting Jagadhapattinam, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore for talks with the fishermen there, on August 17-18.
On August 19-20, they are in Chennai, thrashing out the problem between Sri Lankan and Tamil Nadu fishermen by meeting Fisheries Department officials.
The growing animosity between Sri Lankan and Tamil Nadu fishermen has reached a flashpoint with fishermen of the island nation and the Lankan navy attacking and killing Indian fishermen.
The problem arises, according to the Lankan fishermen and the Lankan navy, because the Tamil Nadu fishermen cross the maritime boundary and fish in Sri Lankan waters.
