Chennai, Sept 2: Chennai Corporation is planning to clean the canals and waterways in the city as a precautionary measure for the Monsoon.
The canals in Nungambakkan, Kodungaiyur, Mambalam and Nandanam are being cleaned so that rainwater does not stagnate during heavy rains.
The concrete floors and retaining walls will be re constructed so that the banks do not breach during the rains. Fencing is also being strengthened.
After the estimation by the Public Works Department and corporation, Mayor M Subramanian declared that the cleaning and re-building process will prevent people from littering canals which will be an impediment for the free flow of water.
New stormwater drains are being built in T Nagar, Velachery and Kolathur.
Studies reveal that garbage is being dumped in stormwater drains and canals, leading to water stagnation. Though it is being desilted every year, yet the canals and waterways are choking on garbage, feel Chennaiites.
