The park at the historic Grand Anicut at Kallanai, near here, will be improved at a cost of Rs.2.8 crore under the Government of India-assisted tourism development scheme. According to sources an interpretation centre will be constructed at a cost of Rs.55 lakh, a fresh water aquarium at a cost of Rs 6 lakh and display of historical events will be done at a cost of Rs.48.58 lakh. The sources said a children's theme park with water slides will be developed. Yet another important feature will be providing telescopic arrangements for children at a cost of Rs 1 lakh.
Landscaping will be done at a cost of Rs.30 lakh. Footpaths will be provided to approach all the tourist spots in the Anicut. Compound wall will be constructed around the park. Other works include construction of wayside public conveniences, dressing and cloak rooms, installation of hand rails, illumination and direction boards, the sources added. Grand Anicut Canal banks from Irwin Bridge near Big Temple to the bridge on Gandhiji Road will also be improved with pathways, flooring and lighting at a cost of Rs.1.28 crore and efforts were on to float the tenders, the sources said.
