BlackBerry falls in line

New Delhi, Aug 30: The one million Indian subscribers of BlackBerry services can breathe easy as the Canadian mobile phone-maker, Research in Motion (RIM), today offered to give security agencies access to its core services with immediate effect.

Facing Tuesday's deadline for shutting down the encrypted BlackBerry Enterprise Services and BlackBerry Messenger Services, RIM made the offer to the Indian government to end the controversy on allowing security agencies to monitor the encrypted data.

The offer was discussed at a meeting convened by Home Secretary G K Pillai and further discussion would take place tomorrow. The government has given two months to RIM to execute its proposals.

Sources said it would also ask search engine Google and Internet phone call-provider Skype to meet the guidelines of Indian security agencies.

Anticipating a similar hitch in its services, Nokia has said it will instal a server in India in November to facilitate monitoring of its ‘push mail’ services.
