New Delhi, July 24: Speaking to chief ministers and Union ministers who are part of the National Development Council (NDC), here today, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh touched upon various burning issues, including price rise, growing Left wing extremism and the environment.
He had a word of assurance on the price front saying that the good Monsoon would mean better production and lower food prices.
Regarding Naxal-affected states, he said all states must chip in to help them fight the scourge. He said special economic packages for the states would also address the backwardness that was one of the main reasons for the growth of extremism.
He wanted the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme and the National Rural Health Mission to be implemented by the states more vigorously.
At the end of the day-long meeting, Manmohan announced the setting up of a sub-committee under Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy to address the challenges of urbanisation and submit a report within 12 months.
