MPs close to getting salary hike

New Delhi, August 21: It looks almost certain that the Members of Parliament will get what they want: A 500 per cent salary hike.

Senior Minister Pranab Mukherjee met the agitating parliamentarians who were not happy with the 3-fold increase assured by the government,

The Finance Minister met Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav today which led to the conduct of a peaceful session in Lok Sabha.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Dara Singh Chauhan were present at the meeting.

Lalu told reporters in Parliament House that the issue has been resolved. Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav echoed his views. So, in view of these positive signs, it looks like the MPs might soon get at least as much as what they wanted, if not more.

The argument of the members was that they had commitments back in their constituencies but were paid only as much as a government clerk. They wanted to be placed higher than the government secretary who draws Rs 80,000 per month after the Six Pay Commission was implemented. It remains to be seen of Lalu will get his dream Rs 80,001 and that too with retrospective effect.
