New Delhi, August 17: It is one issue on which there are no differences between political parties - hike in salary and perks of MPs.
Both Houses of Parliament were in a state of disarray today after the MPs raised the issue of their salary hike after the Union Cabinet deferred making a decision yesterday on the quantum of hike.
In the Lower House, members created an uproar during Zero Hour, forcing an adjournment for two hours. RJD chief Lalu Prasad led the brigade of agitated MPs who said what they were paid was less than what a government clerk gets after the Sixth Pay Commission.
MPs from SP, BSP, JD(U), Shiv Sena and Trinamool Congress, not to mention Congress members of the Lok Sabha, were seen supporting Lalu in voicing their demand.
After the House re-assembled, Lalu raised the issue again. This led to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to intervene and assure that a legislation would be brought in during the present session to raise the salary and allowances of the MPs.
The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha also, with MPs, cutting across party lines, demanding a pay hike to meet their various obligations in their constituencies.
