Balasore, July 26: In a boost to the air defence system, India successfully fired the interceptor missile today from the DRDO range near here.
“The mission is successful and the interceptor destroyed the target missile warhead within the range,” said Interim Test Range director S.P. Dash.
The attacker missile took off from LC-III at Chandipur around 10.03 a.m. and the interceptor took off from Wheeler Island, Dhamra, around 10.06 a.m.
The interception took place at 15 km altitude and the target missile broke into fragments.
The DRDO has already testfired the interceptor missile thrice – November 27, 2006, December 6, 2007 and March 6, 2009 - from Wheeler Island.
With this test that was dead on, India’s defence shield on the skies has been strengthened.
