Guidelines for educational ads

The education sector is vibrant with hectic activity which echoes the tremendous educational programmes that take place in the country. According to a report, advertisements by educational institutions have grown phenomenally.

A new set of advertising guidelines have been introduced for the educational segment by the Advertising Standards Council of India – ASCI - a self-regulatory body for advertising content of the Indian advertising industry.

The new guiding principles are applicable to advertisements of all educational institutions, their programmes and coaching classes.

Dhananjay Keskar, chairman and director, ASCI, IBS Pune, who is also in charge of drafting the norms, says that they are aware of the role of educational institutions in churning intellectuals and the trust parents repose in the institutions. The value of learning is seen through degrees and diplomas which are advertised.

ASCI feels that these advertisements should be streamlined through a set of guidelines which are especially drafted for this purpose.

The proposed guide lines forbid educational institutions from claiming recognition, accreditation or affiliations without proper evidence.

Many students and parents have complained to ASCI against educational institutions for making false claims in their advertisement.

The committee has solicited feedback, suggestions on the proposed guidelines by Monday, September 6, 2010 to the general secretary, ASCI, or mail asci@vsnl.com
