Narendra Modi has taken his sadbhawna or goodwill mission to Godhra and will sit there on a one-day fast from 10.30 am today. He carries with him his political ambitions for an image-makeover in preparation for a bigger national role.
Almost 10 years ago, the Godhra train burning incident set off one of the worst communal riots in the country's history, the 2002 Gujarat riots, that left 1200 people dead. The riots remain the one big blemish on Mr Modi's career; they lent him a hardline image that he has been trying desperately to shed in recent months. That attempt has involved overtly reaching out to the minorities of the state that he has now helmed for over a decade.
