Governing council confirms Modi suspension

Mumbai, April 26: The governing council of the Indian Premier League met here this morning and endorsed the decision to suspend its chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi.

The interim IPL chief will be Chirayu Amin.

Except for Lalit Modi, who was suspended last night during the presentation ceremony of IPL 2010 which was won by Chennai Super Kings, and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah who was away in New Delhi attending Parliament, other governing council members were present here this morning.

The 34-page show-cause notice of the council contains 22 charges of impropriety against Modi in his capacity as IPL chairman and commissioner.

One of the charges is that he accepted a multi-million dollar 'facilitation fee' or kickback for assigning the telecast rights of IPL matches.

Another is that he tried to rig the bids for the two new IPL franchises - Kochi and Pune - that were auctioned last month.

Yesterday, Modi had made a turnaround and said he would attend the governing council meeting in Mumbai and also that he would chair the meeting. Setting the agenda, he sought evidence of the impropriety and supporting documents.
