Chennai to host basketball nationals

Chennai, December 14th

   After a gap of 38 years, big time basketball comes to this sportsloving city with the senior national championship for men and women slated to be held here from December 16 to 24.The prestigious event was last held here way back in 1973. Conducted by the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), the nine-day long event would see participation from 25 States apart from institutional outfits like Railways and Services,  according to sources.

The event, carrying an identical prize money of Rs 1.5 lakh to the winning team and Rs 75,000 for the runners-up in both sections, would be played on league cum knock out basis. The top ten teams of the last nationals have been divided into two groups and placed at Level-I, the remaining teams have been divided into four groups in Level-II.After the league phase, the four group toppers in Level-II would play the knockout and the two winners would go into the Level I. The two bottom placed teams from each group in Level I would be relegated to Level-II for the next nationals. The finals would be played on December 24.
